Representatives from three different open prisons gave information about agricultural activities in their open prison houses. In this context, they mentioned that studies are being carried out, especially on greenhouse cultivation with vegetable crops and drought-resistant fruit species in the coastal regions. In the high plateau, they have grown mainly temperate zone fruits, vegetables growing in open-field conditions and also dealing with egg poultry farming.
The representative of the agricultural engineer from the Criminal Institution of Workshops Directorates from Ankara stated that Agricultural activities are mainly carried out by the Criminal Institution of Workshops Directorates in Türkiye. He stated that every open prison according to the region has agricultural engineers, veterinarians, technicians in their organisations. He also mentioned that the Criminal Institution Workshop Directorate is the biggest institution providing on-the-job vocational training in the field of agriculture for inmates in Türkiye. He also stated that during the staying period, modern and sustainable agricultural practices that are suitable for human and environmental health are given teoric and practical information to inmates. Today from grains to legumes; it carries out applied training activities in many brances, from vegetables and fruits to olive cultivation. Additionally, training is provided in the fields of animal husbandry and beekeeping depending on the region too. All participants had also the opportunity to have general information about EcoFarms4Prisons project and project activities by moderator. The moderator introduced a presentation about both Germany meeting activities. Furthermore, it was mentioned the project curriculum and training activities.
All participants gave positive feedback about VET Curriculum. They also said that certified organic agricultural training would be greatly benefit for trainers and also inmates after they leave prisons.
As a result, it can be said that the local round table provides a great advantage to the participants to express their thoughts and problems in their language. Participants also expressed satisfaction with the similarity of agricultural activities in Turkey and other countries, as well as the greater product diversity in Turkey due to its climatic advantages.
